The First Holy Communion Mass took place on Saturday 18th June and was a very special celebration for the eighteen children receiving this Sacrament and also their families. The children have worked very hard at their preparation classes with Fr. Nicholas over the last few months and he has very much enjoyed getting to know them and helping them prepare for this special day. The children practised in Church during the week leading up to the Mass and made beautiful artwork to decorate the Church.
There was a lot of excitement at our final practice on the Friday and again when they all arrived in their beautiful outfits on the Saturday morning. We were very fortunate that the weather stayed fine throughout the morning and the children were able to have photographs taken outside before entering the Church together.
They were very excited but we were very proud of how every child participated so reverently and confidently in the Mass. They read and sang beautifully and supported each other very well throughout the whole Mass. The most important time in the Mass came when, one by one, each child was called by their name to come and receive the Eucharist.
Before the Mass ended the children gathered together on the altar to say a prayer and sing a hymn. This was also a very special moment as proud parents, family members and guests, and school staff watched our wonderful children.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Mass and made this such a memorable occasion for the children. Thanks especially to the Year 3 and 4 team of staff, particularly Mrs Phoenix, Mrs Geary, Miss Rashid Miss McDonald, Mrs Murphy and Miss Self, who organised the rehearsals and practiced with the children. I would also like to thank Miss O’Toole, the RE Leader for all her work helping the children and staff to prepare for the Mass and working with the children during the preparation classes.
Thank you also to Ms Giverin who was very involved in these preparations and spent a lot of time organising and rehearsing the school choir to sing at the Mass. We were delighted so many children from other year groups were able to join us at the Mass and perform as a choir, they were fantastic and really supported the First Communicants. One of our Year 6 pupils, Chun-Yin, led the music by playing the keyboard. He was fantastic and will be helping us with other events before the end of term. Thank you to all of these children and staff and other staff who decorated the Church so beautifully and helped with events on the day. We would also like to thank our School Chaplain, Fr. Nicholas, for all his work helping the children to prepare and receive this important Sacrament.
The children’s artwork is now on display on our front entrance ‘Communion’ display and in the school hall for the whole school to enjoy. The photographs below show the children gathered together on the altar at the end of the Mass.
